Hey all! It is that time of the year…the holidays are upon us. Are you in the full holiday swing yet? No? I hear you, I am not quite there yet either. It really feels like it should be September, all though the weather here today is reminding me more of January than early November. 🙁
I just wanted to touch base, give a word of encouragement to everyone and a quick reminder that the holidays do NOT have to be the stressful, frenzied, rush, rush, rush that they may have been in years past. It is okay to slow down and do less. I will say it again: “You have permission to slow down and do less”. Really, it will be fine. People will survive. They will still speak to you (and if not, was their “friendship” really that important?). The holidays will still be special & magical, perhaps even more so because you will be able to focus more on those few things that you do still and have the mindset/energy to actually ENJOY them this year. Gasp!
So, as stated in a previous post: pop some popcorn, pour the hot cocoa, sit down with your significant other and your kids…either all together or at two separate times, and discuss which traditions are truly important to all of you. Which one(s) could you happily let go of? Is there a new, relaxing, stress-relieving tradition you would like to start or try this year?
Be sure to incorporate time outside, ideally everyday, for at least 10-15 minutes. Soak up the vitamin D that will help boost your feel good hormone (serotonin), improve your mood, breathe deeply for several breathes to cleanse the lungs and move around to increase blood flow. Remember that being in nature will actually help us to focus and increase productivity, so do NOT tell yourself that you can’t spare 10 minutes outside. In reality, can you really afford not too?
Use that time to take a walk and reconnect with yourself. Play catch with your kids on the front lawn. When the snow falls, build a snowman together, teach them how to throw the perfect snowball, set up targets and see who can hit the most, or brush off your ice skates and improve your figure eight. There are so many options that you should not have the excuse of there is nothing to do outside!
